Address: Silkeborg
We’ll head to Silkeborg and embark on a peaceful boat trip across the stunning Silkeborg Lakes. A boat trip to Himmelbjerget is a true classic and offers a charming ride through serene waters, surrounded by lush forests and picturesque islands. Himmelbjerget is not only one of the highest points in Denmark but also a landmark of cultural and historical significance.
The director of Hjeleselskabet invites you on a scenic journey, sharing stories of the past and visions for the future – including the legacy of the world’s oldest coal-fired paddle steamer, Hjelen, built in 1861 and still sailing daily across the shimmering waters toward the majestic Himmelbjerget.
Upon arrival, Himmelbjerget awaits – rising 125 meters above the lake’s surface, and reaching 147 meters in total with its iconic tower. Here, mythology meets reality: According to Norse legend, Himmelbjerget is the highest mountain in the realm of the gods, Asgard. It is said that Heimdall sits atop the mountain at the end of the rainbow bridge, Bifrost, guarding against any giants who dare to sneak in.
For the adventurous, a beautiful path leads to the summit – a walk of less than 30 minutes, rewarded with breathtaking views.
After enjoying the area around Himmelbjerget we return to the boat and sail back to the starting point.
This trip is the perfect combination of nature, heritage, and relaxation – a great experience on both water and land.
JCI made a difference
After the challenges brought by the COVID-19 pandemic, Hjejlen, the world’s oldest operational paddle steamer found itself in financial trouble, facing the risk of bankruptcy. In this critical time, JCI Silkeborg stepped in to help save this iconic piece of local history. JCI Silkeborg helped raising the necessary funds to keep the steamer operational and today the old paddle steamer is still sailing on the lakes of Silkeborg
